A CAMEL

HORSE
DESIGNED
BY A COMMITTEE

The Courthouse Gallery, Clare.
3rd February - 1st April 2023.

‘A Camel Is A Horse Designed By A Committee’ was an exhibition-in-progress by The Glue Factory, based on the parlour game ‘Consequences’, where a collection of words or images is collectively assembled by a group in sequence, each participant responding to the end of the previous player’s contribution.

In this exhibition, each of the seven members of The Glue Factory occupied The Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon, for one week. In that time, they created and assembled new work using the gallery as a project space, and responded to the work left by the person before them. They were free to rearrange, edit, flip, and hijack as they pleased the previous artists’ work, though notes were left by their predecessors expressing how they wished their work to be changed or left unchanged. It was as much an experiment in trust, as it was an experiment in quickly responding to another artist’s work.

At the end of the seventh week, The Courthouse Gallery hosted a closing event, where the work was left in the gallery as-is, marking the evolution of the exhibition over seven weeks.
